If you're looking for numbers and statistics, Kids Count can help. The website is a project that provides state and national data on the staus of children in America. There are several data sources, many of the available for free online. For example, The Kids Count Data Book tracks ten core indicators:

1. Percent low birth-weight babies
2. Infant mortality rate
3. Child death rate
4. Rate of teen deaths by accident, homicide, and suicide
5. Teen birth rate
6. Percent of children living with parents who do not have full-time, year-round employment
7. Percent of teens who are high school dropouts; percent of teens not attending school and not working

9. Percent of families with children headed by a single-parent
